You may not be surprised to know that an astonishing amount of history has played out in this narrow central-American country… To name an example or two: Balboa discovered the Pacific here and Sir Francis Drake was buried at sea in a lead casket off the Caribbean coast. History pops up everywhere you look, such as in the ruins of old Spanish forts that still guard the coastlines of both oceans and in hidden remains of ancient civilizations that are still being uncovered as we speak.
A quarter of the country has been set aside as national parks and protected areas, ranging from a lush rainforest less than 30 minutes’ drive from Panama City, to the legendary Parque Nacional Darién, the last great wilderness in Central America, which no road has ever crossed.
The natural riches of Panama are overwhelming. It has close to a thousand species of birds, more than in all of North America, and innumerable plant and animal species found nowhere else on earth.
Its two oceans are so close together that you can swim both in the same afternoon. Along the coast are 1,500 islands with some of the most stunning and unspoilt coral reefs, and with world-class diving, surfing and white-water rafting. A piece of trivia that may surprise you is that more deep-sea fishing records have been set here than anywhere else on earth!
And then, of course, there’s the Panama Canal - still one of the greatest wonders of the modern world. A transit through the canal across the intensely diverse mountains and jungles of Panama is breath-taking and quite unforgettable.
The Republic of Panama lacks only one thing that its overexposed neighbours have in abundance: hordes of tourists. It’s hard to think of a single country on the planet that has so much to offer visitors, yet does not have millions of tourists lurking in every crevice! Bliss!
